Taujenai village is 15 km north of Ukmerge, on the right bank of the river Musia, by the aboriginal Vilnius - Panevezys highway.
Taujenai has got a mention from the first half of the XVI century. Taujenai village has been building up near the manor and at the midle of XVIII century already became quite big settlement.
On the year 1790 Taujenai long-suffered from the blaze: most buildings of the village and church burnt out.
On the period of interwar Lithuania Taujenai was center of the shire. Here was the grade school, post-office, police station, medical and veterinary stations, drugstore, athenaeum, the mill, sawmill, 10 stores, dairying company.
As all other vicinities of Lithuania, Taujenai suffered for the first Soviet and German occupations, postwar periods.
In the year 1950 Taujenai became the center of the circuit. From the year 1995 Taujenai – the center of elderate.
Taujenai is the second elderate in the district depending on territory it takes (231,31 sq.km.). To the elderate belongs 54 villages and 2065 people are living in. Taujenai has border on Panevezis district elderate Vadokliai, Anyksciai district elderates Traupis and Kavarskas and neighbourhood of Siesikai, Vidiskiai, Pivonija elderates. There are 3 acting schools at the elderate: Taujenai secondary school, Baleliai basic school and Uzulenis primary school. Also here works 4 libraries, 3 branch establishments of cultural centre, 2 community‘s medical stations, dispensary, 1 post-office, churches in Lenas and Taujenai, meeting-house in Baleliai. Three communities – Baleliai, Taujenai and Uzugiris - cherish good activities. Farmers, agricultural co-op „Taujenu sodai“ and modern fur and leather garment manufacturing enterprise „Roris“ are swimmingly working in Taujenai elderate.
People are incentived to clear and cherish their environment. The contests of the most beautiful homeseads are arranged annually. Varying sports contest are popular in the elderate, International amateur theatres festival „Prie dvaro“ is organised, people playing, singing.
Newly reborn manor is beautifying Taujenai village. This manor is the center of rural tourism, active recreation, parties and conferences. The manor of Antanas Smetona is prepairend for renovation.
The surrounding area of Taujenai is beautified by Lenas lake, pond of Taujenai, Musia steam and private artificial lakelet of Pivorai in Baleliai. The forests of Taujenai, Kraupenai, Lenas, Uzulenis, Garbenai and Giruziai are the bigest in the district.
Antanas Smetona, the first Independent Lithuanian President, was born in the village of Uzulenis.
Uncommon birds (which by the EU standards belongs for the First category of protecting birds) nidificate in the surrounding areas of Taujenai. One of these uncommon birds is black stork. That‘s why black stork and columns of manor and church facade‘s has been chosen to be a symbol of the blazon.
The standard of blazon of Taujenai has been approbated by the Heraldic committee on 27 of January, 2005.
